Here's a case fan for the retro PC case. It's modeled after this http://www.retro.net/keywords/Emerson_Electric_Fan/Emerson_Electric_Fan_7.jpg

Thanks! I'm thinking I should polish up the blades though... they need a little help. I also noticed after I posted that the blades are running backwards. Smiley

The plated wire frame and screw tabs are fantastic cholton! Can I beg a favour from you? I've been trying to recreate realistic looking electrical plug terminals for the last week... Smiley ...how did you do it?

Duane

Thanks Duane!
I'm going to do this from memory because this computer doesn't have HS. The screw tabs are just brushed aluminium. For the wire frame, I started with the default brass (under metal tab) and changed the color to be a more silver and goldish color. Then I added a hint of bump mapping to rough it up a little, I think it was a height of .5 or 1. I also think I used the foam normal map but just about any of the default ones should work (you don't have to use the normal maps now but I do out of habit). Because of HS being a real time renderer, the fun part is experimenting with everything. Oh, I used german dirt road as the HDRI.. seems to be my favorite lately. Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Chad

Thanks Chad! Appreciate the tip...I gave a lot of it a go, but unfortunately all I end up with is grey featureless slabs, same as before. Smiley Your's looks great though. Smiley

Hey Duane,
You may have to play with the scale more. Are you seeing any bump at all? Play with different environments too. Are you able to post a screenshot of the area in need?

Duane,
Here's a screenshot of my wire material settings. I started over with this one to see if I'm doing anything different. Plus I wanted my blades to look less like potato chips.

Ah, those blades are coming up a treat now. They looked anodised in the previous render, not so much like potato chips. Smiley

I think the main problem with my render is that the metal area is very flat and small. I added a tiny radii to the edges yesterday and it improved the realistic look of the parts a lot. I was way off with my settings though - thanks for the screenshot! I'm on a vertical learning curve here at work, so really appreciate the help.

I'll post up a render soon...unfortunately, the renders have just been to big a task for my machine and I'm still finding out what settings I can use to avoid 2 hour renders/software crashes.

Thanks again Chad, you're an absolute legend! Smiley

Renders of my 'thing' posted under the Industrial Design forum, so I don't hijack your thread...don't really do justice to your advice, but I'm getting there.

Well, I had a decent looking case all modeled up and ready to slap into HS but my work PC with 2 meg just wasn't enough to handle it. So no images coming soon... Smiley
